Pukaki is an example of CB Civil’s ability to perform structures projects with an experienced team, self-perform construction using PERI formwork systems, coordinate with complex M&E installation, and carry out the necessary planning up front to ensure on-time delivery.

The Pukaki Irrigation Scheme delivers irrigation and stock water to approximately 6,000 hectares, over four high-country stations in the Mackenzie Basin. Water is delivered at sufficient pressure to drive pivot irrigatorsand overcome varying onsite topography.

In 2017, CB Civil were subcontracted to head contractor Monodelphous on this design build contract to construct seven large reinforced concrete structures, cast insitu on the Pukaki Irrigation Scheme, and associated civil works.

JOB NAME Pukaki Irrigation Scheme, Monodelphous, MacKensie, Otago

CLIENT Monadelpho

CLIENT REFEREE Jeremy Couling, Shane Clark

START DATE October 2017

COMPLETION DATE October 2018

The scope of works included:

  • Construction of large intake structure – 18 x 8 x 6m
  • Construction of three pressure reducing valve chambers – 10 x 6 x 3m
  • Pond inlet spillway structure, complex geometry – 20 x 5 x 2m, with tapering floor structure poured on sloping grade
  • Pond outlet structure – 8 x 8 x 6m
  • Road crossing culvert structures
  • 60+ thrust blocks
  • Coordination with M&E installation
  • Construction of a 15 x 5m siphon building

Intake Structure

From the start, the project presented tight timeframes with a short mobilisation period. To ensure we would complete the project on time, we developed methodologies incorporating Monodelphous’ management systems.

Through upfront planning, deploying our experienced team and implementing the PERI formwork systems,
construction proceeded to programme. Mix designs were developed, optimised to the alpine conditions,
long concrete delivery travel times, and set times.

Pressure Reducing Valve Chambers

Flexibility was key to integrate Monodelphous’ M&E installation contractors. We worked collaboratively with them and adapted our sequencing when required. CB Civil was responsible for all quality requirements, including on site / off site testing, production of ITPs, and progressive QA approval with Monodelphous. This ensured the work we were producing was delivered to a high-quality standard with no rework.

Despite having to deliver numerous structures in a remote and challenging location, we completed the project with zero defects on final handover, on time as planned, and delivered safely with zero LTIs. We have since secured further work with Monodelphous as a result of this performance and our proven ability to coordinate well with their team.
